I'm Sterling Abbott, and I'm glad you're here.
If there's one place I've always felt closest to God, it's outdoors. Some of my earliest memories are of hunting, fishing, riding horses and donkeys, roping, and exploring God's creation alongside my dad, granddad, uncles, and brothers. Those days gave me a lifelong love for the outdoors, a deep respect for wildlife and conservation, and an appreciation for faith, family, and the simple blessings God gives us every day.
I graduated from San Angelo Lakeview High School in 1984, Odessa College in 1986, and Angelo State University in 1990. For the next 28 years, I had the privilege of teaching biology and coaching. I loved helping students and young athletes discover what they were capable of and watching them succeed.
When I retired from teaching, I realized I hadn't stopped being a teacher—I had simply found a different classroom. Today, that classroom is the outdoors, and my students have four legs. Training our tracking and hunting dogs has become one of the greatest joys of my life. There is nothing quite like watching a young dog discover its purpose, grow in confidence, and become a dependable partner in the field. Seeing our dogs do what God created them to do brings me the same satisfaction I found in watching my students succeed.
The greatest blessing in my life, though, is my family. My wife, Susan, and I have been married since 1988, and we're blessed with two sons, Shea and Seth, who now serve alongside us in S&S Tracking & Outdoor Services. Watching them carry on our family's love for the outdoors—and now passing those traditions on to our six grandchildren—is something I treasure every day.
You'll often hear me say, "Hunting for Jesus." That phrase was inspired by a dear friend who shared her testimony at Fields of Faith. She had endured trials no one should ever have to face, yet her message wasn't about the hardships—it was about the faithfulness of Jesus. She reminded us that no matter what this life brings, Christ loves us more, and He will carry us through.
That message took root in my heart because it echoes the promise found in John 16:33:
"In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world."
To me, "Hunting for Jesus" isn't about searching for Him—it's about pursuing Him every day. It's about looking for His hand in every sunrise, every hunt, every conversation, and every opportunity to serve someone else. It's remembering that while we may spend our days tracking game, our greatest pursuit is following Christ and pointing others toward Him through the way we live.
Whether you call me to book a Whitetail or exotic hunt, recover a trophy you've worked hard for, enjoy a hunt behind our dogs, or simply spend time outdoors, my hope is that you'll leave with more than a successful experience. I hope you'll leave having made a new friend, experienced genuine Texas hospitality, and seen the love of Christ reflected in everything we do.
Welcome to our family. I look forward to sharing God's great outdoors with you.
